Natural dreadlocks
The term natural dreadlocks is often very misunderstood and misused. Salons and locticians often offer natural dreadlocks meaning any dreadlocks that are real hair, not synthetic.others mean no wax or perm and consider crochet natural
but, natural dreads dread naturally
they start from loose combed hair and become dreads orgaicly
sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes months they begin the transformation by allowing it to happen at its own pace in its own way
i’ve actually seen hair become dreads in a night if it wasn’t braided before bed every night. not mature of course but it became baby (monster baby his wanted to dread so fast it would have been 6 massive dreads in days)
it’s funny to me in a way how some people go years wanting to dread then when they finally decide to want to rush through the process..the journey then want to dreads in a day
My dreadlocks began in the wilderness, camping a few weeks in the mountains of Vermont
only the back was long enough to dread at the time but it dreaded real fast by just adding beads to loose hair
the rest dreaded as it got long enough over next couple months
I separated alot early on so ended up with tons of dreads the number always changing at times over 200
but last few years hardly at all letting the roots thicken up alot more to in the 50s range
but still new babies are born all the time
no effort needed its what hair wants to do

Add on To my last comment was reading that root rubbing causes baldingm, ive root rubbed alot if i stopped would my hair recover or am I screwed?
absolutely stop!
unfortunately its probable that you pulled 1/2 or more of your hairs right out of the scalp
rule of thumb
if knottyboy or dreadheadhq recommends it… DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING IT!!!!
So will it recover, I’m stopping for sure, and seen what you said about the t-gel that’s why my loose hair isnt knotting? What product would you recommend on that site you linked and what one to remove the residue. Also I wear my tam alot of the time is that alright? Its really loose not tight at all. hope i didn’t mess my hair up root rubbing feel like such an idiot going to a dermatologist to get it checked out.
teatree rosemary if you got dandruff
patchouli if its more like psoriasis
as for residue removal nutragena anti residue works but smells like dirt
suave i think it is has a clarifying shampoo
anything that says it removes residue and buildup
but these are not non residue dread shampoos, they are just meant to be used for removing buildup
tams are ok wool tams even help somewhat but they should also be left hanging free to move even more of the time
Alright I ordered the tea tree, I want to thank you for all your help, I will give you an update when my loose hair starts knotting. Once again thank you.

Hello Soaring eagle, I’ve had dreadlocks for About 15 months and ive got lots of loose hair that just wont knot up, I’ve only got 14 locs (figured they would be good sized but they are pretty thin the thinnest one is probally about the size of a sharpee) that were started with backcombing, then moved on to neglect had this loose hair for a good bit and it just wont seem to knot up was talking to someone about getting them fixed but thats a few hundred dollars and I dont have that, and Also id rather do it the natural way then getting someone to fix them but im just at a loss need some suggestions. Also I use t+gel shampoo for dandruff and is that good for Dreads? Thank you for taking the time to read this, Hope you can help guide me
t gel is at the top of the list of most toxic shampoos
it is very conditioning and full of residues
try http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com
the teatree rosemary for dandruff, the liquid will make them dread like crazy then switch to the bars
id also recommend you use a anti residue or clarifying shampoo (they are very harsh and toxic but you want to get that residue out)
(they should only be used a few times a year to remove buildup)
Had free forms for about 4 months and I want them to start combining together (sorta like the weekends) any tips on what I should do?
if you don’t separate they will try to combine together
if you really want to force it put a bead over 2
in the link I posted ive been growing my dreads for almost 5 months they haven’t really locked yet and its been a day since I got them done and they still hurt wat do I do
having them “done” was a really relly bad idea they make them so tight it damages the scalp and causes balding
so…what was done to them to begin with
stay away from all salons at all costs
wash them often let the roots loosen
if they were interlocked id demand a refund and if your able to safely undo the interlocking you should but you only have a day or 2 to safely undo the interlocking and should get help from someone who can see whats going on
Give thanks for the wise words on dreadlocks and giving out a more and more poitive vibration with each year with locks. I had locks now nearly 10 years and no thought that i could ever chop them – after a time you realise that the locks growing you as much as you growing them.
I grew out my beard sametime that locks started forming but for a long time I trimmed, often times to start with, then more recent years usually every 2-3 months. The longer I had locks the more it felt wierd trimming the beard and did regret it soon after, more each time. Now I’ve left my beard 18 months and even starting to lock up a bit. Still get some temptations to cut it back but less and less, so not as safe as locks on my head though think i would regret it alot by now.
What reflections have you got on a beard locking up, how long it take and good care advice. Not much advive or comment out there on a dread beard, still pretty rare these days – can sometimes cause a reaction – but feeling like a good thing to do, most times.
my beard dreads are to my knees (longest 1) just wash it the same way you wash your head dreads that’s it pretty simple really
You say oily hair doesnt knot well, and thus water only does not make nice dreads. Do you have any pictures showing this phenomenon ?
Also, i f I just live on the beach for a whole year, wont thedrying effect of salty water be enough for my hair to dread well ?
i have nothing against washing my hair, its just that i want to experiment with living off the land in wilderness. any suggestions with something you can forage to wash your haur ? 🙂
good question soap nuts if they are available..the eskimoes wash with urine since it wont freeze ..wouldent recommend it haha
theres some microfine cosmetic quality clays you can wash with but where youd find that I dunno
aloe yucca can be used but are conditioning rastas use a plant called umm.. I want to say acka but I don’t think that’s right but I think its only native to Jamaica youd have to research native plants to the area and their uses
many ppl livin in the wilderness use dr bronners because its so biodegradable and pure but it wont work good in hard water areas, and.. it should never be used in water sources instead cary a bucket 300 feet (more if theres a hill running down to the water) and wash that way far far from any water its only biodegradable in soil in water it can take years to break down
oily hair will dread just way slower, the oils cake the hair together then it knots but the oiliness makes knots easy to slip out
living on the beach, sea water will make it dread fast however u still need to rinse and wash it out salt will fry your scalp can even eat holes oin it if not rinsed out the ocean is a toilet ..billions of fish use it as a toilet, and die, and rot in it lots of raw human waste is pumped into it toxic waste is dumped into it the pacific is dying from the radioactive waste of the japan disaster
commercial fishing dumps millions of tons of fish guts overboard daily …knowing all these facts…wouldn’t you want to wash that out of your hair soon after swimming in the ocean
Hello! I’ve had my dreads for 3 months and they are coming along just fine except at the back,I’ve found that my dreads are flattening and creating big spaces where there is no dread! I’m suspecting its from where I have been sleeping, but its a little bit embarrassing to see “bald patches” should I sleep with them in a braid or something like that? Cheers!
absolutely not they will round out on their own, bald patches are unusual in natural dreads unless you have real thick dreads, real thin hair, or are twisting them or something to tighten the roots. its probably going to work itself out, just check to be sure they aren’t forming too big.
the side you sleep on will dread the fastest, flattening is compressing wich is tightening. And when you flatten then flatten again from another angle and again from another the end results roundish dreads..almost all will get rounded, the 1 that stays flat will be your fave cause its not round and boring like the rest
if your still concerned, post a discussion on
dreadlocks site with photos
So im about 3 weeks in to doing the water only method on my hair. i have taken a few epsom salt baths and a betonite clay bath, which my just above the shoulder length, dyed hair was exsposed too. pretty impressed with the process of my hair seperating and forming sections at the roots already.. i was just looking for a few pointers. im a whole food plant based lifestylist (: and wanted to eliminate the over use of chemicals in my home and on my body since i have been a year without putting these inside of my body. just kind of made since to me.
so im leaving this comment today in hopes of some more inspiration to let those freeforming babies continue to do their thang.
well
id recomend washing with something something natural but something more then water
http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com is about the best stuff out there or u can use baking soda and acv look it up on http://www.dreadlockssite.com
Thanks for the advice!
now can i ask, why is it important to wash it with the bs and acv or the natural stuff in the link you shared?? (which, by the way, i was very impressed with their site. seems to be the stuff right up my ally)
vs. the completely natural way of just letting your natural oils take over.
i was having a hard time finding an answer to that question on the dreadlockssite.
oily hairs slippery and resists knotting
clean hair knots faster ..dry hair as apposed to oily dreads and tightens faster this is why sea salts used in the liquid to dry the hair and make it knot like crazy
I thank you for your last answer soaringeagle but do you think that tea tree oil shampoo is good for dreadlocks, and if its good should i also mix it with water and then throw it over my head, or should i only rub the soap in my hands and then put it on my head. And if i should only rub the soap in my hands which amount of soap should i put in my hands?
depends on what teatree shampoo your talking about, if its not made for dreads i wouldnt use it
theres no need to dilute shamopoos except dr bronners
use what u feel you need but if your dreads are young only scrub the scalp
If i wash my dreads should i mix the shampoo with water and then throw it over my head.
only if your using dr bronners, wich cant be used in hard water
also you shouldnt be using regular shampoos
I don’t comb my hair all do is wash and grease my is like 2 inches will freeform that way
yes though the grease will make it harder to dread if not impossible if you wash with something like http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com bars not liquid, the bars, you shouldnt need to grease if u wash a minumum of weekly or more
if you do need sometthing use jojoba oil, and try to use it only on the scalp
but the less greasy and oily the better it dreads
I heard that wearing dreadlocks can cause potential hairloss. What can anyone do to prevent it (i dont twist, i jus wash and rib).
your fine then its twisting and interlocking that causes hair loss look at people like jah levi that grew thiers to 14 feet or anyone with 20-40 year old dreads that are 10-20 feet thier hairs still thick and strong its the forced tightening salons do that cause hair loss
hey there my dreads are thinning on top and i have soft hair been growing it for 5 years now started off with interlocks, now i just get them twisted once every month what treatment do u recommend to make it thick and strong on the top and also whats the best shampoo to use when washing my hair? please help iam about to cut them off
this is ver4y simple
stop retwisting and interlocking both cause traction alopecia and balding both are extremely bad and especialy that often
yea im sure u got thinning..alot of it stay away from salons stop all twisting entirely go to http://www.dreAdlockssite.com read up on traction alop-ecia caused by interlocking and retwisting massage the scalp dailyto stimulate bloodflow take biotin daily
tell the salon they destroyed your hair and have no right making money off dreads if they intentionally cause balding

My next question is if wrapping my wool sweater around my head when I sleep, after I wash my hair, and before I go to bed going to flatten my baby locs while freeforming? If so, how long do I have until they flatten forever?
till they are tight they will flatten no matter what u do when you sleep but the flattening as they move around tends to make them round
they will always change shapes alot especialy early on very few would stay permanently flat
though the ones that do will just be cooler then the boring round ones
I’ve wanted dreads since I was about 3 years old but my parents would never allow it. I am now 17 and I would like to start the natural process the day after I graduate (I think it would be a good symbol of a new start in life and whatnot) but I have a dance competition about a month after. Would I be able to put my hair into a bun or would it be too early into the dread process to put it in the bun?
ofcourse you can just the only issues with buns and updo’s etc is if you do it alot it slows the process but once for a competition for a few hours isnt going to harm anything
Thank you for the answer soaringeagle,
I wanted to cut the dreads which cover my forehead a bit shorter, because its a matter of time when they will reach my eyes. But are there other methods (instead of cutting) from preventing them reaching my eyes
well its better to let them grow once long enough they will just lay to the back instead of hanging in your face..
till then just wear a headband but only a looser 1 and only when itsreally annoying u
how can i but my dreads a little shorter without doing any damage to the dreads?
how long are they why do you want them shorter
if you cut them do it at an angle
Can I wash my dreads only with water, and without any soap or shampoo? I planned also to put some lavender oil a few times in my hair. Is that ok?
thats not washing its rinsing and wont really get it clean you can but shouldnt
lavenders fine
I finally made it o my three month mark! Super excited about it, here have been a lot of changes to my hair its freakin awesome. My one question is separating them. I hear from people to run your finger along your part lines but my hair dreaded naturally and I’ve had a few congos since starting so my part lines aren’t really clean cut. how do you recommend I separate them and how often? Right now I kinda just pull them apart and kind of twist them until I feel like its to my scalp.
wow i almost never miss a comment
but just pull them apart..never twist twisting causes traction alopecia and balding
Dude your dreads are flippin amazing for real man. I just started my freeform journey almost three months ago and I’m diggin it man all the way. I have really curly hair and its all joined up together rather nicely except for this one patch at the back of my head. It doesn’t bother me any, I’m just kinda curious as to why it hasn’t done anything yet. Other than my loose hair around my face and that one patch my head is all dreaded up. I guess my question is have you ever run into this? I pretty much always let my hair do what it wants is this one clear patch my heads way of preserving my “regular” hair type?
Is it near the hairline like that little point that the back? It’ll just take a little while longer. That’s all
It’s actually kind of in the middle of my head not really on my hair line at all. It cracks me up though man, I hear what your saying though I’ll give it time and if never dreads so be it! Thanks a lot though man I appreciate it.
it will get there have faith
I have been growing my hair for a while now and even had a dread forming but combed it out, my question is my school does not allow curtain hair styles and dreads is one of them, but I was thinking and surely that is discriminative to my religion
so basically should I be allowed, yes or no?
Yes, that’s correct it is illegal to say no dreads. It’s religious and cultural discrimination. However, if it is just the style as in like salon dreads that they can say no because it has no religious or cultural connotations. Some schools may try to make you prove your religious beliefs or get a note from a church leader. This is also illegal since religion is a personal thing and not the property of anyone church nor dreads only a part of the Rasta religion, but of almost all other religions.
Schools and Company policies can not contradict the Bill of Rights
Thankyou, but I was also thinking – should I be able to wear a tam as it is also cultural wear?
i would think so yes
