Natural dreadlocks
The term natural dreadlocks is often very misunderstood and misused. Salons and locticians often offer natural dreadlocks meaning any dreadlocks that are real hair, not synthetic.others mean no wax or perm and consider crochet natural
but, natural dreads dread naturally
they start from loose combed hair and become dreads orgaicly
sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes months they begin the transformation by allowing it to happen at its own pace in its own way
i’ve actually seen hair become dreads in a night if it wasn’t braided before bed every night. not mature of course but it became baby (monster baby his wanted to dread so fast it would have been 6 massive dreads in days)
it’s funny to me in a way how some people go years wanting to dread then when they finally decide to want to rush through the process..the journey then want to dreads in a day
My dreadlocks began in the wilderness, camping a few weeks in the mountains of Vermont
only the back was long enough to dread at the time but it dreaded real fast by just adding beads to loose hair
the rest dreaded as it got long enough over next couple months
I separated alot early on so ended up with tons of dreads the number always changing at times over 200
but last few years hardly at all letting the roots thicken up alot more to in the 50s range
but still new babies are born all the time
no effort needed its what hair wants to do

If Im Using The DreadHeadHQ Wax … It says to Blow dry Them as well… How long Should I blow dry Them for?
Also, How long And How Often should I apply the DreadHeadHQ wax In My 6 to 7 Inch Long Curly Hair.. Im Latino If That should Matter? Haha
never ever ever use wax! or anything dreadheadhq recommends
wax is a scam and a dread killer
if you used it already your best option is to start over comb out that mess scrub with extremely hot water (dont butn yourself hot as you can safely use) and loads of dawn dish soap
only option is http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com makes wax b gone
ok im going to give you links on proper dreading

thats a complete dreading guide
http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/dread-wax-why-ya-dont-want-it
thats the truth about wax
http://www.dreadlockssite.com/page/dread-wax-removal-is-finally
dread wax only glues the hair together to look like dreads but prevents the movement needed to actually dread.
it hardens inside making them seem mature but it makes them st5iff and sticky and gross
it traps dirt and water wich causes mold
it causes infected breakouts
it coats all your furniture clothing everything ruining them
wax is the number 1 cause of dreads being cut
and dreadheadhq is a well known scam and a scumbag site
1 last thing

dreadheadhq reviews
oh and blow drying wax into your dreads makes it far far harder to get it out
like i said dont do anything at qll that dreadheadhq recomends its all a scam and destructive and wrong
My husband has just begun to let his hair dread naturally and he has asked me to take responsibility for the entire process as he literally does not want to do anything. For the past week and a half he has not combed it and has used the locking liquid shampoo twice. Just a couple of questions. How often should he use the Himalayan sea salt spray as it only provided instructions to use on wet or dry hair? He just began to use that product two days ago and I am already noticing a tangling effect and so I don’t know how often it is recommended that he use it. Also, last question, Would he be able to use a steam room and/or Jacuzzi without compromising the dreads?
Thank,
T 🙂
the pink himalean sea salt from http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com is special with added proteins and herbs good for hair and scalp health so its safer to leave on longer and use more often then regular straight sea salt or any ‘dread accelerators” out there
if you notice the hair and/or scalp getting too dry then cut back
weekly is plenty often enough daily probably overkill so anwhere from once or twice a weeks good id think every 3 days is a good max
yea that stuff works wonders
oh keep in mind the liquids also got sea salt in it so you shouldnt neesd to use the pink stuff all too often
saunas jacuzzi sweat lodges it doesnt matter its fine
live your life to its fullest dreads will happen as you live
some are scared to go out in the rain let alone swim while others scubadive and surf some are afraid of a gentle wind while others drive with windows down and skydive with wind rushing by at 200 mph
I have at least 4 inches of hair, if not more. Some of my hair that has twisted on it’s own, is hidden by hair that is covering it. Is this normal? And does putting a wool sweater, on a pillow help hair to knot up?
yup its normal african hair will dread at just an inch or 2 caucasian closer to 6 inches
a wool sweater helps most people yes but a few have found it to do the oposite so experiment
all the hair will dread at diferent rates so some will form dreads faster then others
Hi, its me again, so my journey has began, and feeling great:),but after this 2/3 week I’m noticing my hair is going back to the fall syndrom :'(, is it ok if some loose hair come out of the bush, or should they stay in the bush helping it to form dreads? And what’s sthe solution of hair fall in this journey?
And here’s what I’m exactly doing, please let me know if I’m doing anything wrong?
* Mixing 50 grams of soda with two litre of lukewarm water, pouring it all over my hair.
*Wash it after 10/20 minutes
* repeat the process again just replacing the soda with vinegar.
Now I’m finaly learning to realize your first lesson, “not to worry”, and trying to do as less as possible for my hair. 🙂
nothing can be done about falling
the baking soda ratios i dont speak metric so it should be 1 part baking soda to 10 parts water
acv untill mature use way less,,like a spoonful or 2
People that I have met, that have dreads suggest that I twist the hair using a Locking Gel because my hair is so soft. I’m a little Skeptical about twisting for fear of balding. Any suggestions!
people will suggest wax and salons too doesnt mean they are good ideas
the locking gels typicaly sold for your type hair are then baked in till it hardens
wich glues the hair in place but prevents dreading
they generaly dont wash much at all ..even not at all for a year
the gel mostly washes out so it really doesnt do much of anything but it can cause pretty horific buildup
ive seen people with african hair but the dreads looked grew to white
it wasnt cause of age it was buildup..stopping the gel use and using a residue remover and it turned black again..less stiff and heavy and much softer
washing..and sleeping will get ya there
At what point, does the hair begin to knot up? It will be 4 months of dreading my hair October 21. I have soft curly hair. my hair now has twist in them some are thick and some are thin.
it varies widely length texture and what you wash with and how (as well as dry) all make a diference
some start to lock up extremely fast
like get knotty in hours to days
many more weeks vast majority 1-3 months with some taking longer some ..rare few.. take alot longer
whats your hair length type etc
what are you washing with..how..how often
how are you drying
do you tie it up or back much or wear a hat etc
I wash with the Tea Tree liquid shampoo, and I wash it every 4 to 5 days. I don’t towel dry, I shake the water out of my hair and let it air dry. I would say I have about 2.5 to maybe 3 inches of hair. I’m Black with soft curly hair.
teatree shampoo from http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com or a store bought brand? not all natural shampoos are good for dreading
caucasian type hair needs 6 inches to lock generaly african hair will lock much shorter perhaps your hairs that in between texture that needs a lil more time or length
but have no fear it will happen just takes patience
if you could post photos on http://www.dreadlockssite.com might help give ya a better answer and estimate
From Dreadlockshampoo.com
I’m black, and I started using the shampoo bar soap. Just recently I started using Tea Tree shampoo From the dreadlockshampoo site. I mix the two soaps together the liquid soap and the bar when washing.
no need to mix them use wichever works better for ya
when washing try to just wash the scalp without messing with the hair t]itself
I decided not to buy, the Locking Magic Gel. My hair is twisting on it’s own. Some twist are thin some are thick. Hopefully it will start to mat up soon.
yea thats mostly for hard to dread hair most people will dread fine without it
I have soft curly hair, and I’m considering the Locking Magic Gel. Is this something you would reccomend? I’m seeing curls and twist in my hair now. Also, I have had to pull them apart, because they two twist tangeling.
if your going to use any gel then thats the 1 to use..e careful not to pull apart anything that is trying to dread if they arent dreaded yet leave em alone ..unless its dreading too huge once dreading pull apart if 2 try to combine
BTW….I also take pre-natal vitamins and biotin to help ensure the health of my hair so that may be why I am not seeing thinning at the roots.
well partialy but like i said twisting in your hair type doesnt help atall..im asuming you dont do it super tight and it doesnt stay tight
in african hair they twist it extremely tight then pin them gown cake in gel or wax and bake it till it hardens (gel) so the roots stay pulled way way way too tight constantly and itsthe over tightness that causes the thinning and baldong
When hair is dreading, does hair move in a way that it feels like something is in your hair. Sometimes it feels like something is crawling in my head but nothing is there.
itch is common early on could that be all it is an itch?
I purchased bottle of Pink Himalayan Sea Salt. Did you say that, it dries out the hair? If you said that, I would suppose that it helps with hair knotting and tangling. I did use it last night, but it was after I washed it. I left the spray in my hair and had not problems. Also, they gave me a small bottle of Tea Tree locking shampoo.
yea thats the stuff and she always gives a lil free extra and a hand written thank you
What’s the difference between Wax and Locking Gel? I have seen youtube videos of where they used locking gel, when twisting a persons hair. Why don’t people grow dreads naturally? You never heard of Bob Marley doing twisting wax or none of that stuff. Rastas grow them naturally. Now we have Salons, what a shame.
gels easier to remove thats about it they still bake it in till its hard
and yes its a shame they try to make natural dreads seem gross but then salons say not to wash it for a whole year..thats gross
Just so you know, when I started dreading in june of this year. I noticed that the top part of my head looked bald. You could see the scalp. After I started taking Megamen multivitamins from GNC the hair grew in those bald like spots and I see where it filled in. Megamen has 300 MCG of Biotin in it. Just wanted to share this anyone who might have experinced this.
before u started dreading were u wearing it in tight braids cornrows or twists..if so just stopping that would have helped it grow back in
No I never wore my hair in braids, or corn rows, or twists. I always got hair cuts. My last hair cut was May 11, of this year. Don’t know why it looked bald, or why I could see my scalp.
hmm
ok just wondered cause thats typuical of any style thatr over tightens ghe roots
How do you use the Himalayan Sea Salt spray Do you spray on hair before or after washing? And how long can it stay in hair, before washing it out?
most sea salts youd use no more then 2 hours b4 washing this tho i have left on for days withoit issues ..thoigh youd want to spray the hair not the scalp
uswe yoir judgment if it gets too dry then rinse after 2 hours if not then u can l,eave it on as long as u want
Just how good is that, Himalayan Sea Salt spray? And what is the purpose of using sea salt spray?
everything they make is awesome
well sea salt dries out haor so it knots and tightens faster
himalean pink sea salts the strongest plurest salt on earth
but it also has vitamins and proteins added that make it good for hair and safer to leave on
How do you use the Himalayan Sea Salt spray Do you spray on hair before or after washing? And how long can it stay in hair, before washing it out?
Hello. I started my natural dreads on April 15. I haven’t combed, or brushed my hair since. I have mixed hair (which can be hard to define). I have a really tight curl pattern. So far, I have dreads in the back, about 20 or so, but not really any in the front (from the top of my ears to my forehead). 1) Should I be concenred?
2) I want more individual dreads, versus large clumps of dreads. I’ve heard that some people just pull apart big dreads before they fully develop, your opinion?
3) I don’t do anything to my hair when I sleep, and it tends to make my baby dreads look all crazy, sometimes bent in random spots, or pushed forward, making the back of my head flat. Am I still in baby stages and its normal, or could something be wrong?
5) I wash my hair twice a week. I am going to start shampooing/conditioning once, and then just doing a rinse on the second day
6) I saw the best dread results when not using anything besides water to wash, however, I have a very dry scalp that tends to flake up if I go too long without shampoo. Does using shampoo/conditioner only when I start to see flakes sound okay? I mean obviously its up to me if I feel comfortable.

you want to wash the ppl that only use water arent very clean tho u dont want to use regular shampoo or conditioner (if you have typical african hair tat is excessivly dry use minimal aloe or jojoba as needed )
you will want to seperate any forming too big otr trying to combine
its normal to dread 1st on the side you sleep on seperating will help prevent the flattened out look
if you tie em bck alot stop tats interfereing in the process
When I washed my hair, this morning I saw a lot of loose hairs in my hand. Is this normal? How long does it take to start seeing baby dreads? And do you seperate dreads with a comb or with your hand?
u shed like 120 or so hairs a day so yes its normal
how long can vary so widely from hours (raree) to almost a year (rare)
but typicaly its a few weeks to a couple months
you seperate with hands by pulling 2 connecting dreads away from eachother
Thanks for having such, an informative web site. I did research on dreading and found your site, which is big help. Now my question is this when starts to form dreads, can hair section itself? And if not, who would you recomend to do it. I’m skeptical about Salon and Locticians.
yup it absolutely sections itself but as it dreads u wil have to seperate so they dont join together
and you should be skepticle of salons and locticians ..you shiuld avoid em at all costs
I have soft curly hair, is it true that curly hair dreads best?
And does all hair that, is dreading have to become nappy to dread?
typicaly it dreads fastest altho in some cases straight fine silky hair can dread very fast too
umm..whats the technical definition of “nappy”
it has to get tangled yes messy (in a way) yes the messy stage can be beautiful
nappy is tight curls and no straight hair cabn tangle and dread without curling 1st
I have two questions for you. How does Biotin help, people who are growing dreads? I’m two months into dreading my hair, and my Mega Men multivitamin has 300 MCG of biotin in it. Second question Does wearing a beanie, while sleeping at night help hair to knot up? I just got a beanie yesterday, and wore it to bed after washing my hair, which took 3 hours to dry.
biotin dont help hair dread it helps it grow fasster but u need a much higher dose and daily for months to see any effect dont wear nothing to bed and beannies are too tight tams are loose enough but the more they hang looe the better .. leave em loose at night to tangle
