Natural dreadlocks
The term natural dreadlocks is often very misunderstood and misused. Salons and locticians often offer natural dreadlocks meaning any dreadlocks that are real hair, not synthetic.others mean no wax or perm and consider crochet natural
but, natural dreads dread naturally
they start from loose combed hair and become dreads orgaicly
sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes months they begin the transformation by allowing it to happen at its own pace in its own way
i’ve actually seen hair become dreads in a night if it wasn’t braided before bed every night. not mature of course but it became baby (monster baby his wanted to dread so fast it would have been 6 massive dreads in days)
it’s funny to me in a way how some people go years wanting to dread then when they finally decide to want to rush through the process..the journey then want to dreads in a day
My dreadlocks began in the wilderness, camping a few weeks in the mountains of Vermont
only the back was long enough to dread at the time but it dreaded real fast by just adding beads to loose hair
the rest dreaded as it got long enough over next couple months
I separated alot early on so ended up with tons of dreads the number always changing at times over 200
but last few years hardly at all letting the roots thicken up alot more to in the 50s range
but still new babies are born all the time
no effort needed its what hair wants to do

how to natural dreadlocks
Hello NICE site! First looked on here I believe around a yr and a half ago. I have mixed africanamerican / scottish / puertorican curly coils, and am about 20 months of growth and freeforming, only seperating about 4 times. So far i can pull it up to a pony bun looking thing, wash it 2 times a week with a shea cleanse shampoo.
Only question I have is previously to growing this set of hair, I have braids/cornrows for about 7 years, which now leaves me with the corners of my hair on the top very light compared to the rest.
well irs a good thing yoir freeforming thenm or it woul.d get worse! massage the scalp with jojoba pwepermint and rosemary theres probly others too u need top stimulate bloodflow
theres alot of info on traction alo[ecia and dreads onwww.dreadlockssite.com
keep all tension off the roots
Would you say the dreadlock shampoo bar is good for african american hair?
absolutely
african hair needs extra moisture the beer in the bars should fill that need you most likley will need no additional oils or products but if u do a lil jojoba oil will do u good
Hey I am in the process of planning for dreads. I’ve decided not to use anything but to do it all naturally. So how should I prepare? And what kinda of sectioning should I do? What do I keep them sectioned with? What should my weekly care look like at the start, and then once I start getting more complete dreads? I’m sure I have more questions! But I want to be sure to have the best possible dreads I can, even if it takes a while. Is there anyway I could email you with questions?
you dont section it sections itself when they dread they try to combine so you seperate them often wash with a dread freindly soap like http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com (best dred shampoo) seperate as needed thats all
add yoir questions to http://www.dreadlockssite.com and the new version http://www.dreadlocksforums.com
hey there, i’ve been letting my hair naturally dread for almost a month now, they have naturally formed really good dreadlocks, good size, thickness that i was aiming for etc, but there are still areas of hair that are still a bit straight/ not knoting together, any tips to help or should i just be patient and continue what i’ve been doing? peace 🙂
there will always be some just ignore it it’kk take care of tself
your only a month in..if there wasnmt undreaded parts id be worried
wont be fully dreaded for about a year.relax
hey there.
i no longer use shampoo in my hair.
i just use water to clean my hair and i massages my scalp
do you think thats a good decision since its just water?
and also when i wash my hair my hair unravels then i have to rub my hair in a circular motion again and seperate but when i wet my hair it unravels again.
this is my second month because i started freeforming march 1’st so my hair might take some time to show its process
thanks for your time
jah bless!!!!!
yiu dont want to be rubbing you do want to be washing
are u african american or not slight diferences in how it should be washed
now you want to wash right (no rubbing dont worry about unraveling u shouldnt have “raveled” to begin with.
1 washing method its a no touch no scrumb way
1 cup baking soda to 10 cups water (1/2 to 5)
stir add any essential oils u need pour over head
soak 10 min then rinse
mixa teaspoon to 2 tablespoons apple cider vinager in same amount water pour on then rinse right away
method 2 get the soaps from http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com (best there are) scrub only the scalp not hair
then just leave it by
dont towel dry
dont mess with it
just leave it alone to dread
Thank you for the advice
Is it good to wash your hair with just water???
washing with water isnt washing its rinsing
you may not feel oily or itchy but u still have alot of dirt in them
I did not know you had a blog, I haven’t combed, felted, cut, roll, or shape my locks since we had a talk about my moment of weakness. I have yet to allow unfriendly influences in my life, I really have alot to thank you for. But I think the best way would be to show you. I will I promise, I wanna help people see a more natural way of looking at things. I’m thoroughly done with research on hair to “prove” a social right to lock my hair. I don’t have to defend my natural decision, right? Lol also I missed my “devil’s” curls and the Hasidic curls which have tucked themselves to my head like baby snakes. It’s a comforting feeling when negativity is deflected from me once my hat comes off. The spirit of the world has led us where we need to go with subtle gestures, it’s our turn to take the wheel and drive the boat home. To equality, and fairness. Thank you sir.
well always happy to lead people to the light
had you felted in the past/ how damaged where they?
Well I posted a few questions on felting in around august last year and you had replied with a reasonable response about the felting, and about the having of my locks. You simply said to wait. Put my hair in my hat and forget forcefulness. Oh this was all on dreadlocksite by the way, lol. I had felted 23 locks of my old thinned hair. Polish plaits are what’s now left. Hard scratchy locks, only 4 left. The rest I let it go and they are my new favorites. Soft curly Jewish looking hair. I’m kind of glad I cut the 19 crocheted locks when I did. No regrets, as you put it on dls, force causes damage. And you said my locks could possibly fall out. The four left are strong and what have you. They get pulled bc they are about twice the length of my natty locks. They have been severely stunted if nothing else. So out of experience of about 3 months of having a crochet hook obsessively pulling loose hairs back in the locks I can honestly say it gets you funky scratchy plaits that eventually gets stunted. My theory is I severly danger the locks and essentially killed them. Now they await new hair to grow around them( by the day getting fluffy around their roots).
yea i remember we get so few questions about felting most already are aware how bad it is were you the 1 that let a freind do it as a demo for a cosmotology class?
at least u didnt kill em completely
No, I’m not him, but I did need your help. And I’m glad I was somehow led to a website you frequented lol.
well not only frequent i created it so pretty much live there
Well that’s just neat, lol. For a while I felt I needed exess of information on hair locking’, so i looked everywhere. Id find books in the library about african, asian, sryian and essoteric ect. Lol. Idk, seeing life for the great neutrality that it is I have realized alot. Realized and accepted. Lol. That’s a big Part, accepting the truth about time, patience, care, and people lol
haha well there was so much bad info out and ppl making a simple natural thing so complicated u needed a degree (loctician is a madde up word to make tangled hair sound so hard you need to a technition to tangle your hair)
so i made the site to help ppl realize how free and easy it is
but now those licticians and waxd pushers hate me haha
Well in a monetary society freethinking people aren’t a desired thing, although in a fair and equal environment it’s the only outcome.
i dont come from a monatary society
i come from 1 with an economy based on giving sharing trading..and doing for othhers
I Just Started Dreading My Hair And Its All In One Big Clump. Should I Start Pulling Them Apart Or Leave Them Alone?
if u dont want 1 huge dread seperate
Hello! I have been dreading my hair for 6 months now. I was with bronners but add tea tree to it and also use the acv/bs wash sometimes too. My dreads seem to be doing great so my question is will the loops and flat dreads all round out and suck in eventually? When will this start to happen. I have loved this journey so far even though a lot of my friends and family just don’t get it. I don’t get why they continue to destroy their natural beauty and think I’m the strange one..?!
well most will suck in and round out eventualy..near maturity
some will stick around adding character
when the wild loopy stage is over you will miss the loops\
and some people will never get it
the same ppl think lips should be neon pink and you should have bright blue around your eyes so it looks like someone punched you
but if u dont wear makeup and shave every day and let yoir hair be beautiful naturally they dont get it
but paint on a face over your face and that they call beauty?
Exactly. It’s disgusting how blinded people are these days.
it truly is
i know an elder woman..who has a long goatee beard
and instead of shaving it or hiding it she cultivated it to 8 inches long and decorates it with beads and trinkets
i think embracing your natural self is so beautiful
but people who lazer remove hair to shape thier eyebrows into unusual extremely high arches just look so weird to me
Hello again
I got another question about
the back of my hair being flat
When i wake up do i wet it or just let it be???
Thanks for your time
Jah bless
probly wont make much diference either way but id just let it be’
If i let it be do you think it will grow to one huge dreadlock?
Would the back of my head go back to normal if i dont mess with it?
I had a mini fro do you think i should wait til my hair grow longer
Or of course stay strong and just free-form
Im new to this so forgive me for asking simple Questions
Thanks for your time
Jah bless
well if u dont want 1 huge dread u should seperate often
Hello i am new here so its an honor to be on this website. I started free-forming last Friday and im enjoying it. I was growing a fro and picking my hair. But i decided to stop that (but it was hard though..lol) im african american so my hair is kinky (nappy) looking. And i know its easier to dread. But anyway i washed my hair two times with this natural bar shampoo called “j.r liggetts shampoo tea tree and hemp oil” and i have a question everytime i sleep and wake up the next morning the back of my hair is flat. I thought my hair was long enough to dread but my hair is able to lock though. Can you just tell what i can do to prevent that from happening please. Thanks for your time. Jah bless
thats actualy just fine dreading happens by movement during the day and compression at night
as you sleep you compress the knots that formed that day
i have no knowledge of that shampoo so cant say if its good or not on http://www.dreadlockssite.com we have shampoo experts that can answer that question
when dreads form they may look flat especialy in the back but from rolling around in your sleep they tend to get rounder over time
Thanks For Your Response man i appreciated alot. im glad you told me about that flat hair issue in the back. i was just worrying so much for no reason….lol. i washed my hair yesterday with the same natural bar shampoo and scrubbed my scalp good and stuff. and it felt good. i was on you tube and i was watching a free-former his username is “datdudedave” i think and he was talking about a towel-rub method and i tried it and my hair looked kinky and bob marley looking..lol
i was sooo happy about that. i just wanna know have you ever heard of this method.
also i want my dreads nice and thick so do i seperate my hair so it wont form one thick lock or would it seperate itself to thick locks?
thanks for your time bro.
jah bless
well wool rubbing creates a generaly knotty mess which then has to be torn apart into dreads if u just leave it alone it will section itself then dread u dont have to section it dreads thicken over time till mature and thicken more by congoing if u dont seperate at all they join together
some can grow way too big that way..thick dreads over an inch thick are extra hard to care for
Hey wassup bro. I got a quetion i want to ask you.
Does drinking lots of water and eating fruits and vegetables speeds the process?
I know it takes PATIENCE but does it helps?
Thanks for your time
Jah bless
not sure but if your healthy your hair will be too ive been vegetarian for almost 30 years and mine dreaded fast and grew fast but cant say for sure it affected anything
Hey there, I have been contemplating doing dread for some time now, just don’t really know where to start, I’ve already read all the blows and what not but I’d like a step by step, do I just not comb and wash with shampoo? Or…? Hope the hear back from you soon, would like to get this started.
my site http://www.dreadslockssite.com has a dreaducation link that has a ton of info
but basicly stop combing use non residue dread freindly shampoo http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com is best
when using the shamppoo scrub only the scalp then rinse thru the hair or use the baking soda recipe on dreadlockssite wich is a no touch method ..drip dry dont rub with a towl
sections will form then start to knot they will tey to combine or grow too big so seperate them if they get too big
note: they thicken as they mature so judge mature dread size by the area of the scalp the roots come from..u want no bigger then an inch
Okay, thank you very much, great deal of respect to you and your great websites.
Hey I stopped combing my hair 20 months ago, its probably about 4 inches past my shoulders. but it looks nothing like everyone elses who i look up. i do wash it maybe once a month but with the correct shampoo that leaves no residues in your hair.
thank you
you need to wash more washing helps dreads dread dirty oily hair wont want ti dread wash 1-3 times a week minimum 2-3 times a weeks ideal every 3 days is best
use sea salt too and what shampoo just cause its not residue dont mean its dread safe it might be too conditioning
ps if washing more doesnt make a difference u cab try the baking soda wash also how are u drying often the problem is rubbing out knots as you dry
but if these adjustments dont help in a few weeks join http://www.dreeadlockssite.com post pictures so we can all see whats up and help u out
Ive been using the shampoo I got from dreaheadhq.
Just the shampoo I have not used any other of their products. And when you say sea salt do you mean just rub it right into my hair. or get an empty bottle and mix in sea salt with it.
A friend told me the last thing I wanted to do was have wet hair sitting because she has had to cut out a couple of her dreads because of mold. So I have been drying them with a hair dryer.
removed the link cause never would support that site! dont use that its extremely toxic do u have dandruff proriasis dermatitis? it causes those as well as cancer and hair loss
thats not a dread shampoo its a hunting shampoo developped by daddy then jonny repackaged it for dreads ever wonder why he warns against residues like scent (scent must be airborn to be smelled so isnt residue) but then suggests waterproof residue like wax? that shampoo is developed so u can sneak up and kill anu=imals without being detected by smell its made to be used a couple times a year max so u dont have any toxic issues
try these http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com or the baking soda recipe on http://www.dreadlockssite.com
sea salt u mix sea salt and water 3.5 % sea salt so its the sanme as sea water
it costs 2 cents to make a bottle u can make 300 bottles for a few dollars the dreadheadhq accelerator is just 2 cents worth of sea salt for 10 dollars (but he adds a ingredient derived from human urine..nice huh)
your freinds dreass probly molded because of wax use
its best to shake em out and air or drip dry or sun dry it will only mold if u wear a hat or tie em up damp so no airflow gets around them or if heres wax in them
when u wash if u use baking sida dont scrub
if u use shampoo scrub scalp only rinse thry the hair
if u use sea saly \t apply 2 hours b4 u wash dont leave in too long
ooo dear. haha well that would explain that, yes i was getting dandruff. I would have to use a dandruff shampoo ever soo often to counter act the dandruff, which as a result was even more toxic for my hair :/
hmm well in that quick time i can tell you i have tossed that nasty stuff right into the trash.
When applying the sea salt do I soak my entire head as if it were shampoo in the shower or just lean my head over and put it all in there?
.
ea salt u can spray on the hair only try to avoid the scalp or if u do the baking soda just add it to that
if u think thats crazy you know the lock peppa? google the ingredients list and u find another exact product ..a product made to help remove ear hair from cats..
nice huh
and the ingredients if u look up each 1 individually will make u laugh.. sand..clay..tree sap are main ingredients..in other words..dirt.. but he adds a herbicide to prevent plants from growing in your dreads
How nice of them to prevent things growing…
is the salt a once a week or have a timeline in which it should be applied?
its not nesacary..at all… but does help so once a week is plenty too often and u over dry the hair and it gets brittle and breaks easy
so what would you recommend i was my hair with because it would seem as though the shampoo i have been using may be the root of the problem. (pun intended) Because after 20 or so months of nothingness i would think it would be a bit different
on http://www.dreadlockssite.com look up the baking soda deep cleanse its a no touch soak that wont undo knots add ea salt to it and see how the next month goes
after they are dreading good switch to the http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com shampoos they are absolutely amazing
It seems as though only about three inches of the ends are tangling and the top part is .loose and free easily pass throughable, is this normal. Also what can be used for dandruff, I am getting a lot around the scalp of each dread and the “itcheies”.
Right now I am washing every 3 days with baking soda and water mixture and once a week a salt soak.
freely pass throughable? not sure i know what you mean but the roots should be loose up to 3 inches for the 1st 8 months at least then tighten up to 1/2 inch when mature
are u doing acv after the bs if not tats why u can switch to a dread shampoo like http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com or if u prefer baking soda use acv after and add rosemary and teatree
if u use hot water cut it back to cool to cold
hot water will make dandruff worse
hah yes wasnt sure how to describe it. yes the roots are loose. Will the acv leave an unpleasant smell in my hair? I think im going, or id like to try and avoid buying anything at all even if it is all natural. id like to make it myself that way i can see what it is i am putting in my hair. Ever since you told me all the horrible things that were i the dreadhq products i feel comfortable knowing what i am making from experienced people and what works. 🙂
no you mix it very weak for new dreds 2 tablespoons to 5 cups water oiur on then rinse old dreads 1/2 cup to 5 cuos soak 3 min u need it hai=rs ph is acidic baking soda alkaline alkaline will mean dried fried itchy too acidic oily u need to reset the ph back to slightly acidic the scents gone b4 u finish rincing at lest by tuime it dries
should i be mixing my salt in with my avc mix instead of just putting the salt in my hair before i wash?
u can put it in the bs thats fine
also i just tried making bs wash with 1/2 cup bs and 5 cups of water but i can not get all the baking soda to dissolve theres still a bunch sitting on the bottom
are u in the uk thats common with very alkaline water try boiling it
are yiu stirring reach in break up all lumps
are u sure its baking soda not baking powder?
yes im sure it is baking soda. tomorrow i will give boiling it a try and see how that goes.
baki9ng soda turns to gasses in watrer its probly dead skin try using more baling soda
No i am not in the uk in the us east coast. oh so if the baking soda dissolves if boiled then that would mean i boiled it right out of the water
?
u shouldnt need to biol it if not in the uk but as soon as baking soda combines wo]ith water a chemical reaction begins that causes it to turn into gasses part of the cleaning power is that reaction
after awhile it all evaporated so u cant have any baking soda left over in fact when acv would hit it thered be another reaction causing a diferent chemical so wouldnt be baking soda any more
what might be left if made too weak is a dead skin paste
yeah, i just washed my hair with the cup of bs and into 2 quarts of water but i had boiled it so it was essentially water like you said, but then used my acv rinse and now my head is a ginormous dandruff mess.
advice on the next step?
bs to water ratios 1-10 1 cup per 10 cups
teatree and rosemary essential oils help but really the best is the teatree rosemary bars from http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com
thank you once again. as always you are patient and very helpful
You probably get a lot of this but, i started about 3 months ago. I havent washed ir combed my hair until 2 days ago (baking soda and water, still no comb). But i havent seen any progress. Is it just beause my hair is shor, or do i need to do something else?
how short? but u should be washing! washing helps dreads dread wash weekly at a minumum better yet 2-3 times a week
it will need 6 inches to dsread and if u add sea salt now and then to the bs it will help
well how short is it?
plus your not washing! clean hair dreads best oily hair wont dread at all or at least not easily
wash 2-3 times a week and let it get lil longer and you’ll see a difference
in some cases a couple months isnt long enough to see progress..in most cases it is bu t for a few it takes longer
Hello this might be a little long 🙂
I started my dreads last year with the knotty boy kit and a crochet hook , my hair dreads were fine until I felt so gross and I didn’t separate my hair, it was so knotted that it hurt and felt wrong so I took them out after a couple of months, started watching dread videos upon many methods so many that I considered going to someone but, it’s so expensive and didn’t trust …. After missing my dread locks and wanting them back
a couple of weeks ago I re started dreadlocking my hair, I used a crochet/back combing /rip method/ and rubber bands to split my sections.
Recently I’ve taken out the rubber bands stopped using the crochet Hook /stopped back combing/stopped ripping/ and thought deeply about letting my dreads become themselves.
My hair is wavy /frizzy
My question is : will my dreads be okay if i left them on their own now? Will my head hurt if their not with any rubber bands sectioned since they might lock freely now?
I use a shampoo called ( Yes to carrots) ” nourishing , has beta carotene, dead sea minerals. Says it’s free
Of petroleum and SLS, Paraben-free, naturally. Is this a good shampoo? Also just got some tea tree oil , my scalp felt so itchy before now it’s calmed down . When starting a baking soda wash how long do I have to wait to try one? What do i need other than baking soda?
I’ve heard of dr. bronner’s and how it leaves residue?
Thank you so much for reading 🙂
Peace& love
well wax and crochet and rubber bands are all extremely bad fir dreads luckily u avoided wax this time but crochet will make them extra fuzzy as u broke tins of hairs these hairs will pop out all iover and they will also take 6 months longer to dread they will be fine as long as u never use the hook again never do anything but wash and seperate seperating is kinda important if u dont want hubve dreads
the shampoo im not sure it might be ok but these are best http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com u never wanted rubber bands so good u git them out
u can do baking soda acv rifht away the recipe 1/2 cup baking soda per 5 cups water add any essentiaok oils teatree rosemary etc (5-10 drops i guess) pour over head wait 10 min then rinse tbeb follow with a tablespoon or 2 apple cider vinager in 5 cups water pour on rinse right away once mature use 1/2 cup per 5 and soak 3 min b4 rinse
^^ I tried the wash (baking soda/ apple cider vinegar) and it worked wonderfully, I’m going to order some of those dreadlock soap bars later on when I can. This may be off topic but, I saw your profile on dreadlocksite and was wondering how do you know when or where the rainbow gatherings get together? I know there’s many around the world and I’ve been watching many videos and would like to go next year! Seems like it would be a wonderful experience. 🙂
next nationals montana see events on dreadlockssite theres also a month long end ogf the mayan calander gathering in mexico at the mayan ruins all december the best sites are http://www.welcomehome.org http://www.welcomehere.org
🙂 thank you so much
hope i run into u there
I used to live in the states just moved a while back hoping to go next year or sometime I could save, since mexico is a far trip but would be lovely to see the places I missed out when I was young.
I wish I could meet more people that are relaxed and free flowing here.. its all about money now a days :/
where do u live now? hey have gatherings all around the world
sweet because, I really like the forest here. Alberta , Canada
google alberta rainbow family you can also find an alberta group or 2 on facebook
oh and i knew i missed 1 question
bronners is awesome but hard water isnt in hard water any true soap will not rinse right thats why detergents were made detergents are harsher tho
the dreadlockshampo is a true natural soap but the beer makes it work in hard water too
bronners will work if you add borax
or filter the shower water
or distill it
^_^ I’m so glad and thankful you replied so fast, no one really answers my questions, I will be sure to try out that method . If this helps my dreads it’s so worth it! 🙂
Have a lovely day
if you need more help this dreadlocks site is the best place to get help on dreads
Ah I forgot one last question how do I moisturize my locks? 🙂
well jojoba oil or aloe vera are best, use as lil as you can get away with african type hair gets too brittle and dry so needs it alot more often u can make a spray or add to a rinse or just wipe on
if u use the http://www.dreadlockshampoo.com bars u probably wnt need to moisturize much
heey whats up? appreciate the site for info. i have a question so i hstarted to dread but had my hair in a pony tail when i decided to twist them into dread i made for main ones strait down back, left right, back of my head i have one too. should i just let it tangle its self from now? its getting funky haha should i let it do its own thing now to tighten up that way or can i still mess with it. i get it wet and fully dry about 4 times a week. thanks a lot
im confused haha are you wetting only or washing they should be washed
and you dont have to twist them in just let them form but seperate any that ry to grow too huge or eat eachp=other
the less u mess with them the better
Hi dude
Im about 2 weeks into my dread journey and a big question on my mind is how your meant to dry your hair in the early stages? I usually just dry it in a circular motion with a towel, give my head a shake, then natural dry what ever moisture is left.
well rubbing can knot or unknot id shake out the excess and air/drip dry sun dry when u can when u must blow dry gently in quick bursts like blow a lil wait a lil blow a lil
awesome, thanks for your help!
always happy to help
and definately come by http://www.dreadlockssite.com if u needmore help
My hair is really short fro.How get to start natuarlly
stop combing stop conditioning let it grow and dread as it grows but it wont make alot of progress till u gain a few inches
Hello i was just wondering whether you could give me any tips on how to sleep with my newly formed dreads and i have one at the back that has a loop in it. Is that normal?
Hello again it has been about a month and a half now. I have a very tight dread forming at the back of my head but it has loops in it what does this mean?
means they are dreading 🙂 loops form and eventually pull in tightening and shrinking the dread most loops pull in and disappear eventually forming the surface texture features however a few remain giving your dreads a unique look and personality some loops can do wild thyings during the process enjoy them while they last they can be very entertaining haha
Hi i have started my journy of growing dreads the natural way. It has been about 2 weeks now and I can already feel my hair dreading but only half way down. I was wondering why my hair won’t lock at the routes maybe you could help
they are 2 weeks old the roots will dread months from now thewy need to be loose to move and knot they tighten up around 9 months in if you have drwding at 2 weeks your doing very well theres nothing to fix cause nothimgs wrong they are doing amazingly well go to dreadlockssite read the dreading the 1st weeks of dreading in featured discussions it mainly applies to backcombed dreads but will help u too
Ok thankyou very much for your help 🙂
